Our History

The story of deCarteret College begins in 1919, when the Rt. Rev. Cecil DeCarteret, the sixth Bishop of Jamaica, established what would become one of the island's most respected educational institutions. Originally founded as the Diocesan Preparatory School for Boys in the beautiful parish of Manchester, the school was born from Bishop DeCarteret's vision of providing quality education rooted in strong moral and academic foundations. The school's early years were marked by steady growth and unwavering commitment to educational excellence. In 1931, when Bishop DeCarteret demitted office, the institution was renamed in his honor, recognizing his foundational role in establishing this beacon of learning. For decades, the school served as a preparatory institution, nurturing young minds and preparing them for future academic success. A pivotal transformation occurred in 1960 when the institution evolved from its preparatory roots to become deCarteret College, a full secondary school. This expansion allowed the school to serve students through their complete secondary education journey. The Preparatory School continued to operate alongside the college until it was thoughtfully phased out in 1974, allowing the institution to focus entirely on secondary education. The year 1976 marked another milestone in our progressive history when deCarteret College embraced co-educational learning and achieved grant-aided status. This decision reflected our commitment to inclusivity and equal educational opportunities, welcoming both male and female students into our academic family. This transformation opened our doors wider to the community and strengthened our role as an accessible center of educational excellence. Today, as we celebrate over a century of educational service, deCarteret College stands proudly with a student population exceeding 1,200 and recognition as one of Jamaica's leading schools. Our journey from a small preparatory school to a premier secondary institution reflects not only our growth in size but our evolution in educational philosophy, always maintaining the high standards and strong values established by our founder while adapting to meet the needs of each new generation.
